When did these get cheap? Last I knew any Mustang GT was automatically $7-12k. I was waxing nostalgic about my last S197 and decided to hop onto AutoTempest...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
100/10 would daily drive. That would be a reliable as hell automobile and I still think that bodystyle looks the business.

You were waxing nostalgic about a car that broke constantly?
Oh, I guess you know no other way ...

160K miles on it?
That’s probably a lot of money for that barely broken in car.

Somehow, you find a way to bring the unreliability out of reliable vehicles so at this point I think you should get an old alfa romeo and see if you can amplify its unreliability so much, it flips back around and becomes reliable.

When did they get cheap? When it became obvious that the S197 is literally the worst Mustang since 1978.

Given how long I’ve seen 4.6s go I’m not horribly worried about miles on these. They’re not very exciting or fast engines but they are agriculturally durable lumps of turd.

It was a POS but it was also the most modern and “nicest” car I’ve ever owned and I still love the way S197 pre-facelifts look. BALLED UP ANGRY FENDER FLARES ON A BAR OF SOAP BWAAAAGH

That price range is not uncommon at all for GTs with those miles. Manual ones are scarcer but I was shocked at how many pages of S197 GTs there were under $8k.

It isn’t always the engine that makes you want to take a sledge hammer to a car.
I have a c5 vette. Engine runs like a dream. Everything else around it is made of plastic. EVERYTHING. 20 year old plastic is extremely brittle. Most everything is broken. My wife hates riding in it. The blend door in heater box is broken. It’s not blowing cold air in the summer. it’s hot as balls in it.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s still fun... but really really disappointing. I want to get it all fixed... but when you look at the prices of replacement parts... its disappointing.

Truth bombs raining down.
This is easily the least desirable Mustang since the Mustang II.

And this generation was a lot of nasty plastic. So very much tacky plasti-chrome.

That one is the least attractive generation visually (at least among modern ones), slightly beating the one you posted, but still an objectively better car.

Are you saying an SN95 is an objectively better car than an S197?
...what.

I actually sympathize completely. My favorite car I’ve ever owned, the nicest, best looking, fastest, best handling vehicle I’ve owned by a wide margin, was the ‘04 GTO I owned for 3-1/2 months. It spent 31 days in the shop for various things in that time (thankfully under warranty), so I had to ditch it for something reliable. I traded it in on the Sierra I’m still DDing 12 years later. I still find myself looking wistfully at GTOs whenever I see them. I spotted a lovely slate grey one idling in the Walmart parking lot last week actually. The want, it is still there.

Having owned a fox body and an S197 and driven many SN95 new edge and earlier: you sir are on crack. NVH/chassis stiffness in the S197 is leagues above the SN95s and the interior build quality is miles better though, admittedly, the SN95 doesn’t set a particularly high standard for interiors. Roughly equivalent to a Pontiac Grand Am in the build quality department.

Further qualifications:
3v 4.6 instead of 2v 4.6
3 link with a panhard rod instead of godawful sloppy 4 link bullshit
Based on the fairly refined and stiff DEW-derived platform instead of the Fox platform hailing from 1979 and so shite that one of the most common aftermarket modifications is adding girders to the bottom to give it slightly more rigidity than a soda straw

It’s just so meh though. Like being stuffed inside a bar of soap. For all the updates, it feels like there’s less room in an S197. Almost bought one but my heart rate climbed just sitting in it. Too cramped. And I’m tiny
Having owned two New Edges and spent reasonable seat time in almost every year from 1966 to 2018, I just can’t do the S197

I’m 5'5" and 135lbs and S197s feel enormous to me lol. I could barely see over the dash of my fox body.

Pops sold his ‘08 GT with like 60k miles for 11k$ or 12k$ over a year ago if I remember correctly. It’s pretty easy to get into one. I recommend finding one before tire pressure sensors were added on (I think it started in ‘08).
